After two years working in singapore I still want to go to US to pursue my postgraduate degree,but the wish is not as strong as before I came to singapore,so I just applied only one university where my cousin and his wife is studying now,I sent all my application document early nov.last year,after that it is patience test and finally after my email harassment again and again,I got my I-20 form early april without being offered a single cent scholarship, so here comes the final bstacle,visa application.

There is no more walk-in application since last year due to safty reason(because one of US embassy in SEA received bomb attack warning), so everybody must go through travel agent, within ninety days I submited my application to one of the agency, of course before this you have to get your document prepared: photocopy of every page of your passport,bank statement,income tax bill ect.one week later I got an invitation letter to ask me to go for face-to-face interview.By this time I had already downloaded a lot of question from Tigtag concerning about interview, so I am fully prepared and my spoken english is extremely good(I read english Strait Times everyday,I read various english books during my working years in singapore,I watch english programme on tv everynight) so I am very confident about the coming interview.

Tuesday morning I got up two hours earlier than before so that I can catch the early bird, at 8:30 I reach the american embassy in singapore,it is my first time to be here and I hope it will be my last, it is the most imposing building I have ever seen in my life, it is like a fort which cannot be conquered. After the safty check, I get into the lobby and get my Q ticket through auto ticket issuing machine,there are still twenty over minutes left before the final games kick off so I choose to sit down at the back of the lobby which already occupied by more than twenty people.If I say I was not nervous at that time I am lying to you, I went to toilet three times in fifteen minute, I keep myself calm down and start to look around and at this point an white man settle down right beside me and start to play with his watch, so I initiate the conversation for the purpose of warming myself up:

(m:myself,w:whiteman)m:it is a quite old watch.wh,yeah!so what is time and date from you.m:8:45 and 30th of May,so what are u doing in Singapore.w:I came here to do some business, actually is to attend an exhibition.m:So what are doing in embassyw:I lost my naturalization card and I came here to apply a new one.m:so you are from US,which sate are you fromw:Floridam;Have you heard about the case concerning a small cuban boy named conzelaz.wfrowning)Oh yeah!It is all political propaganda, I don't care about that kind of stuff, it all media show.By this time the counters have been opened and NO.4&5 were interviewed,and very obvious the guy being interviewed by the taller officer looked like he was going to have trouble.(officer,g:guy(from china studying in NUS))o:so you are going to pursue your PhD in US for five yearsg:yes.o:you are married and your wife is also working in singapore.g:yes.o;so what are you going to do with your wife in this five years?g:Oh,my wife will still be working in Singapore and during summer vacation I will come to singapore to visit my wife and in winter season she can visit me in US.o:I am sorry I can't issue you a visa.Guy made a most stupid mistake for making an unreasonable and impratical answer which cost him a precious visa.Few minutes later it was my turn for being interviewed by another officer,very lucky.m:Good morning,sir.oNodding)Do you have the invitation letter issued by us.mpass him the letter and my Q number)Oh,yeah.o:(spending two minutes trying to find my document which i submit through agent a few days ago and finally he get it from a pile of document, looking at my files)So you are going to *** u.for *** programme.m:yeah.o:so can you show me some proof that you can sponor yourself?m:(passing him my original passbook and receipt of my fix deposit,he looking at the passbook)I have been working almost 6 years after graduation 3 years in shanghai where I managed to save ***usd and more than 3 years in Singapore where i make a saving about *** usd and totally it adds up to *** usd and which is more than enough for study 2years ***programme in *** university.(this explaination is very important, it help officer to understand and believe that you have enough money)o:(satisfied again)what is your job in singapore?m:I am working for *** and I am working with two of my colleagues to.....blah,blah...(explain my job to him,actually the purpose of asking this job is to know whether what you are going to study is consistent with what you are doing.)o:(looking at my files and flip through once again and contemplating for a few seconds)ok, we will issue a visa, you can recover your passport from your agent by tommorrow.m:Ok,thanks,do I have to pay visa issuance fee?o:(checking a list on the wall)no,you don't need.m:Ok,thanks,bye.o:bye.I hope my experience will help those who are going to apply a visa in coming days and my advice to you all is be reasonable,practical and realistic.
