BEIJING - China's quality watchdog chief Li Changjiang said here Thursday that China opposes "technical barriers" adopted by some countries to restrict imports of certain goods.

"It is not advisable to raise 'technical barriers' to circumscribe the development of international trade," said Li, head of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual parliament session.

He cited the example of Chinese toy export to the United States, saying that the products had met the technical standards of the United States at the time they were imported.

However, Li said that the United States further raised its technical standards on toys, which the Chinese producers did not come to know in time and some products didn't meet the new standards.

As a result, such toys became unqualified in the US market and had to be recalled, Li said.
